Project16 Bass Version 2

Some time ago, Project16 sampled his Rickenbacker 4001 Bass.  Available as Kontakt and SFZ instruments, you should definitely pick them up if you haven't already. They are among the best free Basses available anywhere and I think they stack up well against commercial libraries.

Project16 redid many Fingered and Picked samples in even higher quality before a rope broke. While this session was never finished, Project16 gave me permission to use the over 1400 samples he had recorded and edited. Using the script and shell by Mickaël Ménager, I've created a new Kontakt instrument called Version 2 to differentiate it from the great Kontakt instruments created by AKJ using the original samples. The two are quite different and both are worth trying.

This instrument has over 1400 samples, every note sampled across three octaves (the top and bottom notes are stretched a bit for extended range) and 5 velocity layers.

The Keyswitches are:
C:   Fingered Bridge Pickup
C#: Fingered Bridge Pickup Muted
D:   Fingered Both Pickups
D#: Fingered Both Pickups Muted
E:   Fingered Neck Pickup
F:   Picked Bridge Pickup
G:  Picked Both Pickups
A:  Picked Neck Pickup

Let's call this a standard Creative Commons License with a request for credit to Project16.

  1. Hi,

  2. Hi Manfred.
You should just be able to unzip it to your hard drive , go to the Files menu in Kontakt and click on the nki file. Sadly non-licensed instruments don't show up under Libraries.

  3. why would the kontakt 5 player tell me that the program is in demo mode and has to be activated (which can't be done through the NI activation center) ?

  4. Sadly all my Kontakt stuff requires the full version of Kontakt to use. Kontakt player requires very expensive licensing that I just can't afford. I did a Maize VSTi version of the Bass that might meet your needs, though Maize doesn't seem to work with some versions of FL Studio and can glitch in some DAWs.

    1. If you don't have Kontakt, try the VSTi versions.

  7. Hi!

I downloaded zip file above and loaded it into Kontakt 5 (full). The only file besides the Sample folder is "Project 16 Bass V2.nki" When I load this file, The key switches as they appear in your image do not show up on my Kontakt GUI. Is the script you mention by Mickaël Ménager missing?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. Does hitting the octave down button a couple times bring them up. The keyswitches are very low on this instrument.

  8. Hi Joe, I tried to download the original Project16 Rickenbacker library but one of the download links from the KVR post you suggested appears to be shut down. I think it's the "fret noise" samples. The link that no longer works is http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qtcresdqym889g4 .

Do you have a mirror for those files or have suggestions for how to get them? For example, are those samples part of your V2 library?

    Thank you!

  9. When I click on that though it says "File Download Blocked
The file you attempted to download has been previously claimed by a copyright holder through a valid DMCA request and cannot be downloaded."

    1. Weird. I have no idea why that would be. Thanks for letting me know so I could take it down before getting into trouble. That DMCA stuff can get nasty.

  10. I really don't want to be desperate for this, but do you happen to have a backup of the "Fretnoise.rar" package? I'm working on an SFZ version of this sample library that involves V1 and V2, along with other extra samples that Project16 and j_e_f_f_g posted in Freesounds to make it more "complete", and the fret noises are the only thing that's missing.
I could just borrow fret noises from other sample libraries, but this is the only free Rickenbacker sample library available and I would really like to make my SFZ version completely free.
    Thank you for reading.

  11. You're the best, BigCat! Thanks for all you do. I had no idea the new samples ever emerged. This is great! Is there, by any chance, a Maize Sampler version somewhere on your site?

  12. Nevermind, thanks, I found the Maize VST page linked to above :)
    Thanks again!
